Make room to listen together

Prepare a quiet space for music and keep playback controls within an adult's reach.

Start at a low volume and spend a little time getting to know the station. An adult can start the stream, listen to the speech and music, and then invite the child to join in. There is no need to turn the radio up to compete with a television. Choose one source of sound or wait for a quieter moment.

Place the device where you can easily stop playback. If you use a speaker, avoid moving it right next to the child to catch every quiet word. When a programme is hard to hear, first check for background noise and consider whether it suits what you are doing at the moment.

Agree on a simple signal for 'enough' or 'a little quieter' and respond without an argument. Listening as a family does not require a constant soundtrack. After a song, you can talk, move around or enjoy some quiet. If the child finds a sound unpleasant, stop playback rather than asking them to get used to it.
